The global hockey landscape has gotten into its most volatile, high stakes stretch of the year, like everything’s suddenly way tighter. From the clean finish of the divisional rounds in North America to the ramp up of the top international championships in Europe, the whole sport’s pecking order is being shaken up, because regular season rhythm just doesn’t carry the same weight once it’s postseason survival time.
Avalanche Advance While Vegas and Montreal Face Pivotal Game 6 Clashes

Colorado grabbed the next step, and they did it the hard way, becoming the latest club to lock in a Conference Finals berth. On Wednesday night they pulled off a dramatic comeback and after erasing a three-goal deficit midway through the game, Colorado forced overtime and then took a 4–3 win over the Minnesota Wild to close the series 4–1, Brett Kulak scored the goal that basically sealed it, and that moment instantly became one of the defining plays of Colorado’s postseason run. The comeback immediately added another dramatic chapter to the Avalanche’s recent playoff history. Next up, they’re waiting on the Pacific Division battle, where Vegas Golden Knights are up 3–2 over the Anaheim Ducks, so yeah that one is still very much alive.
Over in the Eastern Conference the attention swings to KeyBank Center tonight, for Game 5, between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres. The series is even right now tied up, after Buffalo won 3–2 in Game 4, a result that stopped Montreal’s momentum dead for a bit. While the Carolina Hurricanes have already advanced after a dominant second-round series victory. Buffalo has kept leaning on a high pressure forecheck to mess with Montreal’s ability to transition cleanly, and that’s forced both sides into a more careful tactical mode, because neither team wants to end up in that elimination corner.
PWHL Walter Cup Finals: An All-Canadian Battle Begins

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is now stepping into its last chapter, tonight, May 14, with the start of the Walter Cup Finals. The top seeded Montreal Victoire will welcome the fourth seeded Ottawa Charge at Place Bell in Laval for Game 1 of a best-of-five series. This marks the league’s first all-Canadian championship series, which is pretty notable. Montreal earned their way to the final after a brutally contested five game semifinal versus the Minnesota Frost, where captain Marie-Philip Poulin delivered two game winning goals. Ottawa rolls in as a serious outsider, they knock off the Boston Fleet in four games, despite strong goaltending performances from Boston’s Aerin Frankel.
International Stakes: IIHF World Championships and Pro League
The international schedule is crowded too, because the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship kicks off tomorrow, May 15, with several top hockey nations already finalizing preparations for the tournament. At the same time the FIH Hockey Pro League keeps pushing toward its June 28 finish. Belgium remains among the leading contenders in the men’s standings, and Australia isn’t far behind and for the women’s side, the Netherlands continues to sit near the top of the standings alongside Belgium and Argentina. The next “mini-tournaments” in London and Rotterdam are expected to basically decide the 2026 title, and also sort out which teams get the Olympic qualification slots, so there’s a lot riding on those stops.
