The Carolina Hurricanes start the new season exactly where they finished the previous season – on top. Defending Stanley Cup champions are clearly ahead of the pack, sitting No. 1 in the first 2026-27 Super 16 Power Rankings.
Carrying the Weight of a Title

Wins in June ended a long search for the franchise and solidified the culture he developed as head coach, Rod Brind’Amour. This consistency of playoff performance over the last several seasons, and depth and structure, led people to believe in it and eventually to victory.
The task now is to turn that into a reality. Retaining a title requires persistence and thought that generated it, and the competence to deal with the opponent that has to be retained – the opponent of choice. That’s why the Super 16 ranking is given.
Voters voted Carolina first by a large margin because they saw a system that seldom skips a night and a group of old and young talent. There are lots of questions, as there always are after a long summer of fun, health, chemistry, and, of course, the adjustment to a new season. However, the base is still solid.
The Standard Is Set
Starting the season as the unanimous favorite is a mix of pride and pressure. For the Hurricanes, it’s an affirmation of dedication and an indication that work starts all over again. This is no more than a snapshot, a first indication, before games begin to count. Nevertheless, it portrays the anticipation surrounding a champion that has demonstrated its capability to triumph.
Carolina will be the Cup holder and team in first place in the 2026-27 season. In defending a crown, one never has it easy. The rest of the league knows that already, with the Super 16 kickoff at the top.
