The 2026-27 NHL schedule will get underway with a marquee matchup – the reigning Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes take on the Florida Panthers at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh. The first night tilt features an interesting battle of the two most recent Stanley Cup-winning teams, with the Panthers ending two glorious years of Stanley Cup glory for Carolina’s new arch rival. Florida won consecutive Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025 before the Hurricanes’ triumph a little more than three months ago. For Florida head coach Paul Maurice and his team, seeing their division rival raise the banner last spring is sure to add some fire to their bounce-back this season (Field Level Media).
Here’s a glimpse of what each club must work around as they begin the new campaign. Hurricanes head into the new year with their main players intact as they look to defend their Stanley Cup, but the team will start without one of its top forwards, as Seth Jarvis still recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. Florida used the short summer to make a roster move, acquiring Jacob Markstrom to add to their goaltending group. The Panthers are also counting on good early chemistry, with brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk skating in the same forward group (NHL.com).
Due to shortened training camps and a reduced number of four preseason contests in total, both coaches have preached speaking plainly and executing quickly at every turn – from the jump. Carolina moves from the summer grind to the greatest return in sports with a battle between two Eastern Conference heavyweights whose season opener can set the tone in Week 1 (Field Level Media).
