Some of hockey’s brightest young prospects are coming to Buffalo for the annual hotel-hosted Prospects Challenge that will feature a trio of campuses and sport a LECOM tee logo, starting Sunday, Sept. 11, and running through Thursday, Sept. 15, 2025, at LECOM Harborcenter.
It’s the five-team play with rookies from the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Another benefit of the tournament for young players is that they get to play against prospects from other NHS organizations and coaches and scouts can watch them grow before the regular season.
The Sabres said the following night they would have a three-game schedule for their prospects. Buffalo was to sweep the schedule with games against the New Jersey Devils on Sept. 12, the Boston Bruins on Sept. 15 and the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 13. There are other matchups during the event to complete the round robin competition.
LECOM Harborcenter is an important place for development for the Sabres, as it is in the heart of Buffalo. The venue is used regularly for hockey events, and is an ideal environment for prospects to participate in games that are played in front of a crowd.

The Prospects Challenge is a great opportunity for supporters to see players that may seem they can have a big effect on their home club in the NHL. It’s also a very big assessment point for organizations to gauge the skill, competitiveness, decision-making and preparedness of young athletes.
The tournament has become an interesting fixture in Buffalo’s pre-season hockey calendar and provides an opportunity to increase preseason excitement with the upcoming season, and provides competitive experience for prospects.
Note: The date indicated as shown below is confirmed for the 2025 Prospects Challenge September 11–15. Sources consulted did not provide any confirmation for a Buffalo event that takes place in the year 2026 on these exact dates.
