Today considered a sports powerhouse, and enjoyed internationally, few can imagine hockey’s simple origins. Played on nothing more than a piece of frozen pond, with a rubber puck and some wooden sticks, hockey has taken the world by storm in just one hundred years. Beginning as nothing more than a past time in the small towns of North American’s east, this sport has spread its game play to arenas in Europe and Asia. Continually changing, hockey has worked its way into a sport that anyone can enjoy.

Ice hockey’s roots begin in Montreal, Quebec when it was organized, in the late 19th century. Although hockey had been played before this, it wasn’t until this time that rules were instated to regulate the game. Due to increasing interest the National Hockey League was started in 1917, containing a handful of local teams. These local teams began to make there way into the sport of hockey, introducing their rough, physical, professional games into new sporting markets in major American cities during the 1920’s. Hockey continues to make its way from Canada’s small towns into packed arenas of Europe and Asia.
