A big game starts this 2026-27 NHL season. The defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes will raise their banner before the puck drops on Sept. 29 in an eventful game against the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center in Raleigh.
A Fitting Opening Night

There’s no more sensible choice for launching a new campaign on the first night than this. The Hurricanes come into the world as the recent champions. The Panthers are the team that won the last two Cups and a hard-edged, familiar foe from recent playoff clashes.
The early start makes the game the highlight of a hectic first-night schedule on ESPN. There’s always additional feeling during banner nights. That’s the official withering of their new title for Carolina, and one that has been met with a sold out crowd every time.
It is an instant opportunity for Florida to test itself with the one team that stands atop the mountain. With a history between the clubs, there will be no need to wait for the intensity to build.
What the Night Represents
With an 84-game season ahead of them, opening night still sets a tone. The Hurricanes will aim to start the defence of their title in high gear at home. The Panthers will hope to spoil the party and remind the league that they are still in the mix. The focus starts in Raleigh with other clubs following along the rest of the schedule.
With familiar opponents and fresh lines on the ice, a new year has begun in the sport of hockey and a championship banner is up for grabs. When the puck drops on September 29, the 2026-27 season will be officially under way.
