The 2026–27 NHL season is shaping up to be a historic run, because it’ll mark the NHL’s return to an 84-game schedule for the first time since the early 1990s. And with more divisional matchups on the slate plus a calendar stuffed with big outdoor, and international attractions, fans seem ready to watch one of the most spread-out by geography NHL years ever. From the snowy vibes around Salt Lake City, to those arenas out in Helsinki, and Düsseldorf, this set of games is basically the things everyone’s going to remember after the final horn.
The 2027 NHL Winter Classic: a Rocky Mountain mess of a matchup

On December 31, 2026, the Utah Mammoth, the league’s newest rebranded franchise identity, will bring the Colorado Avalanche to Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. This one isn’t only some divisional thing, it feels like the last stop on the outdoor bus, because the Mammoth were the final NHL team yet to appear in an outdoor event before this announcement. The stadium seats more than 54,000 fans, so the University of Utah backdrop is going to look unreal, plus it’s expected to be a gritty, physical night between two Western Conference teams with a pretty quick style with plenty of transition-heavy offense.
The 2026 Heritage Classic: Canadian tradition, Winnipeg-style
The outdoor run kicks off a little earlier, October 25, 2026 when the Winnipeg Jets host the Montreal Canadiens at Princess Auto Stadium and the Heritage Classic remains one of the NHL’s signature Canadian outdoor events, and this year leans into an Atlantic-versus-Central contrast in Manitoba. The matchup also puts Montreal’s younger core against one of the league’s more structured defensive systems, especially against a Jets group that has usually stayed near the top when it comes to limiting chances and turning momentum into pressure.
NHL Global Series: Helsinki, then Düsseldorf right after
The NHL keeps pushing its international footprint with two separate Global Series stops in late 2026 and first up, the Carolina Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken head to Helsinki, Finland, for a back-to-back set on November 12 and 14. Then, the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators go to Düsseldorf, Germany for games on December 18 and 20 at the PSD Bank Dome and these matchups matter beyond points, because they’re also major league marketing plays across Europe, and they continue the NHL’s effort to grow its European audience through regular-season international events.
The 2027 Stadium Series: Stars vs. Knights in Texas

And to close out the big event stretch, the 2027 Stadium Series brings the Dallas Stars and the Vegas Golden Knights to AT&T Stadium in Arlington on February 20 and with that high-tech world-class venue, expectations are that the crowd could get huge, maybe even nudging or challenging NHL attendance landmarks and the Dallas-Vegas connection has heated up lately, especially after playoff battles, so this late-season date could look like a sneak preview of a Western Conference postseason matchup. With the expanded 84-game calendar arriving, these marquee events are expected to carry even more attention throughout the season.
