Cale Makar isn’t just a defender. He is one of the rare players in the modern NHL to be able to dominate a game from the blue line. A complete package of elite skating, offensive creativity, and solid defensiveness makes the Colorado Avalanche star a perennial Norris Trophy contender.
Skating and Offence From the Back End

The base is Makar’s skating. Has a good ability to go hard, change direction, and move the puck through neutral under pressure. That mobility lets him fit into the jam, generate odd-man chances, and quarterback the power play. He is a regular top scorer in the middle, with so many 20-goal seasons on the blue line and the vision to turn zone exits into dangerous moves.
The Defensive Side of the Game
There’s a commitment at the other end with Makar. He skates to close up lanes, positions his stick, and turns the ball over with the help of an active stick. He plays a lot of minutes against top opponents and also blocks shots and retrieves the puck in the D-zone. The outcome is defensive numbers to go with his offensive ones.
Consistency and Impact
Makar has won big awards, a Conn Smythe Trophy, and been a Norris finalist for the past two seasons. He plays around 25 minutes per contest and is a key piece in the Colorado transition and defensive system.
One of the biggest reasons Makar is so memorable in a league dominated by specialised roles is his ability to excel in nearly every facet of the game. That’s a full-package player and equals some of the best players of his generation.
