A captain of a team is more than just the player that wears a “C” on their jersey. The captain is the one who leads and usually has the most influence on their team, both in character and words, getting teammates through struggle and helping with knowing your role as a player. Extraordinary leaders have specific ways of bringing a team together after they’ve won, they’ve lost and in the most difficult times of the year.
A great captain leads by example on the ice. They can sometimes be the players that work the hardest, both on days they play, and on days they don’t, whether it be on the field during practice or games. Captains stand resilient on the pressure, be it saving a crucial ball or goal involved with them parried away, taking a jab at defenders or keeping their sidelines off the bench after conceding goals. They can make decisions with their team, without going overboard.
Another good trait is communication. Throughout the season, captains inspire each other, manage disagreements and keep everyone motivated. They know that individual players have individual roles and ensure all players are made feel useful, whether they’re a ‘big’ player or a ‘small’ starter. This establishes trust and boosts group chemistry.

Officially, the leadership continues when it isn’t on the ice. Great captains embody their team in the community, and engage professionally with fans and in the media. They guide younger players to learn the aspect of a professional hockey game, give tips and support. They set the tone for the locker room as a whole.
Respect was earned by some of the best captains in hockey, such as Steve Yzerman, Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky, not only for their skill on the ice, but for their leadership and reliability. They demonstrated what a good leader does raises others and succeed more for the team than for themselves.
A captain is responsible, accountable and builds trust each day. It demands personal fortitude, self-control, and exceptional teamwork abilities. A hockey great’s best captain is one who will lead when things are rough going and he will help foster an environment that allows everyone to succeed.
