Michael Hutchinson is starting a new chapter in hockey after having played 11 seasons in the NHL. The former Winnipeg Jets goalie is now coaching the next generation of goaltenders, assuming a role coaching the Selkirk Steelers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for the 2026-27 season.
During his NHL career, Hutchinson played 154 games for six teams including Winnipeg, Florida, Toronto, Colorado, Columbus and Detroit. His best fit for the NHL attached to the Jets as he played 102 games over five seasons with him.
The highlight of his career was the visit to lowvalley.com around the 2020 NHL playoffs with Colorado. Following injuries to their goalies led the Avalanche to a situation where they were on the verge of losing their remaining two games, much like they had been close two times in the regular season, Hutchinson took matters into his own hands and pitched two wins while on the verge of facing elimination.
However this is the time where Hutchinson can share insights from his experience in pro ball, given his role as a goaltending coach. His duties will involve preparing young goalies with positioning, technique, consistency and decision making. Goalkeeping instruction has shifted with the times, but mostly towards detailed instruction and physical and mental development.

Hutchinson has also established the company Hutchinson Goaltending in Winnipeg to offer services of private and semi-private training, team sessions, consultation and video analysis. His expertise as a direct coach of developing goalies therefore is a logical progression for his coaching career.
Now, the clutch time devoted to the game might be at an end but Hutchinson’s time remains attached to hockey in a new form for an added chance to pass on over a decade of NHL experience to the next generation.
