Australia bounced back to save England from being bowled out in the final with a strong comeback with the possibility of winning the bronze medal only. They had shown some promise in the game after England’s form was helped by the introduction of two key midfielders in Dominick Kane and Cardiff pledge John Terry, but the result proved disappointing.
England started the game with good spirit, holding on to possession for the early part of the contest. They had several chances to score with attacking play setting up the scoring, and they did score the opener. The best aspect was England’s lively attacking style and well organised midfield.
But Australia started finding their groove and ratcheted up the pressure before half-time. Their opening equaliser put them in control and they were able to run with greater freedom and confidence in the home side defence. Australia went in and in on England’s defence, who had to save, save again.
The second half was largely a Australia game and they took advantage of their increased control. They then scored once more using quick change of play and great attacking work at the penalty-box. After exploiting the hole on the edge of the box, England failed to get a goal past the home side when they did have chances.
Australia’s performance of recovering to score in the match was a testament to the team’s experience in managing pressure. First, they didn’t lose patience when they slipped off track and then reacted excessively when they had an opportunity to finish. However, England struggled to get back on top when they were losing the game.

However England also have some hope to not only survive but to thrive in this tournament around the corner. It will now be up to the team to prepare for the bronze-medal playoff, which would give them a shot at making it on the podium and closing out the run with a win.
England’s coaches called the players “a good effort” but realised key moments took over the situation. It’s now time to recover, projecting how to come out in the final medal bout.
The bronze-medal clash is England’s opportunity to bounce back from the disappointing semi against Germany. If he is able to take that victory he will build on what they have done so far with the tournament and gain a lot in confidence for future international tournaments.
