The NHL’s signature outdoor game is coming to Salt Lake City. The Winter Classic will be held at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the University of Utah’s football stadium, on Dec. 31, 2026, featuring the Utah Mammoth vs. the Colorado Avalanche. The Mammoth will play its first game in the regular season in the outdoor arena in franchise history, and it will be a milestone in the history of hockey in the state.
A New Stage for a Young Franchise

With this match, Utah will be the last NHL team to play in an outdoor game. The event will be held at Rice-Eccles Stadium, whose backdrop will be the mountains and where the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics took place.
The delayed start time on New Year’s Eve provides a festive ambiance and the possibility of lights and an all-stadium celebration. The Winter Classic is of particular significance for the Mammoth as it marks the early years of the franchise. It represents that the league has faith in the market and provides a soapbox for the fans to demonstrate the progress of hockey in Utah.
Adding to the competition factor, the Avalanche come as a familiar Central Division foe and have some outside experience.
More Than a Regular-Season Game
Speculation is one of the primary concerns of the Winter Classic, always as much as position in the standings. Outdoor hockey becomes more of the original game, but it also is played in locations that many indoor rinks can’t beat.
Salt Lake City is unique because of its views of the mountains, its Olympic past, and its New Year’s Eve date. Tickets and surrounding events will make the day a bigger celebration for the city and league.
The emphasis changes from the typical arena environment to outside, where the Mammoth and Avalanche will bring the next chapter of Winter Classic History to life for one afternoon.
