In hockey, we’ve heard it’s better to skate where the puck is headed, rather than where it’s been. Amazon Prime believes it is taking that approach when it commits to 12 years of carrying NHL on Prime ‘Wednesday Night Hockey’ in Canada.

“We at Amazon do think long-term, and as you look at the NHL, the game’s in good shape and we’re fortunate to be in a position to do it for the next 12 years,” Prime Video Canada’s Managing Director Mark Shopiro said, via NHL.com. “Our focus is always about how can we make Prime the best value for our members in Canada, and sport in Canada, it’s hockey.” (NHL, 2026)
“In terms of the sport of hockey, there is nothing much bigger than the NHL, so to be able to get ‘Wednesday Night Hockey’ and the playoffs in the Prime membership, we think our members will see tremendous value in that. And for that reason, we are incredibly excited about it.”
A schedule that includes 27 national regular-season games this season will open Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena when the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL, Prime, MSGSN) host the New York Islanders at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will feature forward Gavin McKenna (Toronto; NHL, Prime, MSGSN) and defenseman Matthew Schaefer (New York; NHL, Prime, MSGSN), the first and second overall picks, respectively, in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Following two seasons of Monday Night Hockey broadcasts on Prime, the broadcast day will now be shifting to Wednesdays for the remainder of the season, and for the first time, all games will have an English and a French broadcast. (NHL, 2026)
Furthermore, NHL on Prime will carry two First Round Stanley Cup Playoff series and one second round series as part of the NHL on Prime package this season at no extra charge to Prime members.
