The preseason hockey games are typically more like warm-ups, but someone forgot to give the Dallas Stars the script. A divisional victory is always good, but a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Wild was a taste of what the Dallas Stars could do in the game this year. The atmosphere at the American Airlines Center was electric with the Stars playing as if they knew the regular season was just around the corner but hadn’t started yet, and playing the way that makes fans start dreaming big early.
The true drama took place just before puck drop. Expected starter Jake Oettinger was scratched late, tossing young goaltender Remi Poirier straight into the bright lights. Talk about taking the opportunity and running with it. Poirier stopped all 24 shot attempts he saw for a perfect shutout. He was calm, had the puck out of the box without tangling in the traffic, and was able to close the door on Minnesota’s high-threat opportunities before they could even get off the ground. If anyone had any doubts about the depth in the crease behind Otter, Poirier provided every Dallas player with a big relief.
The offense was well disciplined and played smart as the units slowly broke down Minnesota, although the goalies took the spotlight. Defenseman Kyle Capobianco was a quiet big man all night, scoring one assist and giving another. He did find a way to break the scoreless deadlock in the second period with a late setup by Matthew Seminoff in the slot. Then in the middle of the third, veteran blueliner Esa Lindell fired a crisp wrist pass from the face-off circle to double the game’s score and essentially put the puck at our feet. There were no fancy plays or complex moves, but it was a matter of steady performances and opportunistic moments.

Beyond the scoresheet, it was the small details that made this win feel so dominant. The penalty kill units stepped up, the young blue-liners showed incredible poise under pressure, and returning forward Joel Kiviranta brought that signature relentless forechecking that drove Minnesota nuts all evening. Shrugging off a surprise goalie change and completely blanking a tough rival proves that this roster’s culture and depth are right where they need to be. If this 2-0 shutout is any indication of what’s cooking in Dallas, Wild fans might want to look away, because the Stars are looking downright dangerous.
