As the 2026–27 NHL season approaches, the trade of Dylan Larkin by the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Detroit Red Wings remains unresolved. After playing his 11th season with Detroit, Larkin asked for a trade in June but the offer is still on the table.
Due to his no-trade clause, Larkin originally only offered a short list of teams that would consider him for an offer. However, things got more complicated after Steve Yzerman stepped down from a GM position in July with no one in place to run Detroit’s hockey operations for much of the offseason. Horcoff has subsequently been hired on as an interim general manager with the Red Wings.
Larkin was in foul weather and couldn’t report to camp on Day 1 due to an upper-body injury. He also lost his Red Wings captaincy after requesting it be traded with the Anaheim Ducks. Talking publicly on September 17, Larkin didn’t apologize for asking for a trade but he didn’t confirm if his request is still pending.
Detroit has also maintained their discussion of what to do with Larkin confidential. The organization has met with the center and is going day-by-day, Horcoff said.

This stands out as an intriguing narrative through both Larkin and Detroit’s journeys in the upcoming season. Larkin has remained with the Red Wings, though the question before the organization is whether or not a trade with them can be viable or if the veteran center can stick around.
Currently, there is no specific agreement on a trade deal. It seems for now Larkin’s primary concern is to bounce back from the injury and for the upcoming season.
