“While the club has been expanding and drawing in more players, another key figure in the club has told PMI that it could be becoming more of a strain on the sport by the club with the space it requires.”
The official said the club is an “unusual and growing community that has made significant efforts to do so. There is concern, though, that hockey will be sacrificed as other sports and recreational events share venue locations.
Nevertheless, quality pitches and training area remain a challenge. Venues may become crowded for many sports that are competing for them, and this has a negative impact on training sessions, junior development and match preparation.
It is necessary to keep hockey equipment apart from other sports, the official said, for the game’s takeoff to be a success. If these clubs cannot have sufficient space they may find it difficult to keep up with an expanding membership and offer regular playtime for young club members.

The club has made a big effort to provide an environment that is inclusive for all, regardless of experience, so that all can learn together. It has also been greatly encouraged by volunteers, coaches and local supporters that have followed the club over the years.
It’s more than just the season, it’s the future of grassroots hockey. Not having access to facilities could hinder participation growth and next generation talent development.
The official said he’d like to see more support from local authorities and sporting organizations into ensuring hockey continues to be a priority in decisions made about community sports infrastructure. They believed that the conservation and upgrading of hockey facilities would have a positive effect on players, clubs and sporting society.
The official is positive about the club’s future, but feels they cannot grow any further unless hockey has the space and resources necessary. Having to prevent the sport from being squeezed out now is regarded as one of the big challenges faced by clubs who are striving to develop on the back of such success.
