The stage was officially set for the 2026 Stanley Cup Final, with this big cross-conference showdown that lots of people already felt in their bones and after a tough playoff grind, the Vegas Golden Knights got it done and took on the Carolina Hurricanes; Carolina punched their ticket after beating the Montreal Canadiens in a five-game Eastern Conference Final, leaving everyone else guessing.
At first there was all this talk about whether Vegas might end up drawing Montreal or Carolina, but the Hurricanes left zero wiggle room and closed the Canadiens out 4-1 to grab their first Stanley Cup Final spot since their championship season in 2006.
Vegas Sweeps to the Final with Unmatched Depth
The Vegas Golden Knights made it to the Stanley Cup Final in a real statement way, wiping out the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final 4-0 and the clincher came May 26, 2026, when Vegas fought through a 2-1 win at T-Mobile Arena.
Even though Vegas grabbed the Pacific Division during the regular season with 95 points (39–26–17), they saved their most punishing hockey for the postseason. One of the central storylines was how seamlessly Mitch Marner had slotted in, and how much he had impacted games since joining the team and there was also the goaltending backbone from Carter Hart and the veteran steady presence of captain Mark Stone and under head coach John Tortorella, Vegas was leaning hard on that deep well of recent playoff experience, as they aimed for a second franchise title, only three years after their 2023 championship run.
Hurricanes Blow Past Canadiens to End 20-Year Wait
Carolina was the Eastern Conference champ, and they really put the brakes on the Montreal Canadiens’ “Cinderella” dream. Montreal started out loud, with a 6-2 win in Game 1, and it immediately kicked around the idea of a Canadiens vs Golden Knights Final. But then Carolina flipped the script, rattling off four straight wins and that streak ended with a 6-1 rout in Game 5 on May 29, 2026 at the Lenovo Center.
Carolina’s relentless scoring attack got even sharper with their newer look, built around the elite chemistry of the Taylor Hall, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake forward group. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour had said his team had truly bought in to the high pressure system, and that commitment was showing as consistency across the playoffs and for Carolina, this was a massive comeback moment, returning to the Stanley Cup Final after a 20-year gap since they lifted the cup in 2006.
A High-Stakes Goalie Battle and Series Schedule

This series set up a really tactical chess match, but the crease part was the headline at least for most fans and you had Vegas’s Carter Hart going toe to toe with Carolina’s veteran netminder Frederik Andersen, who had been extremely solid this postseason, and not just “good,” but steady in the moments that mattered.
Since the Hurricanes finished with the better regular-season record (113 points), they earned home ice advantage for the Finals and the best of seven series used the familiar 2-2-1-1-1 format and Game 1 was set to drop the puck on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina and then the series shifted to the desert for Game 3 on Saturday, June 6 at T-Mobile Arena.
